I. Application Requirements
Manufacturers of electronic gaming machines for the regulated casino industry are governed by many regional jurisdictional regulations and certifications for their company and products. Advantech has been supplying the industry for fifteen years, and understands the requirements that these regulations put on the whole supply chain. Chief among these requirements are long production life and strict configuration control
A casino machine supplier from Europe designed in the DPX-S410 gaming motherboard into a casino gaming machine back in late 2007, and hoped for excellent longevity. In fact the DPX-S410 will still be in production until the end of December 2014—almost seven years, and two years more than Advantech’s promise of five years production life. However, the casino machine supplier has already started working with the new DPX-S435 and expects to complete the transition and be ready for re-certification within a very short time.
II. Solution Benefits The newly released DPX-S435 is the first Intel® Xeon® capable single board integrated solution with a full feature set of I/O, COMs, storage and advanced security designed specifically for the gaming industry. It features the latest 4thGeneration Intel® Core™ architecture CPUs which allows a huge range of price and performance from dual core Celeron, through to Core i3, Core i5, Core i7 and Xeon® CPUs. The casino machine supplier selected the Intel® Core i3-4330TE CPU (2.4GHz dual core, 4MB L2 cache, Intel® HD4600 graphics). This CPU is a mid range selection for the DPX-S435 and offers significantly better processing power than the Core 2 Duo CPU that the company used on the DPX-S410. Consequently, they will achieve a large overall cost reduction on the platform by migrating to the DPX-S435.
The DPX-S435 supports Windows 7, Windows 8 and embedded Microsoft operating systems as well as Linux. The company was pleased to find that Advantech still supports Windows XP Embedded on the DPX-S435. This allowed them to make the transition without changing operating systems. In the future they plan an operating system upgrade to take advantage of the performance upgrades of the new embedded operating systems.
The transition to the DPX-S435 from the DPX-S410 will provide the company with a newvery high performance CPU platform capable of supporting their next generation of advanced games. The process of moving to the new board and the upcoming regulatory certifications are much simplified by the format compatibility, API/software compatibility and legacy operating system support from Advantech.
Advantech selects major components to maximize product lifecycles, working closely with the main chipset suppliers to get early access to the upcoming new technology. Advantech is one of only four premier level partners with Intel and also a strategic partner of AMD. Furthermore it ensures that products are backwards compatible both mechanically and at the software API level. Thus customers can easily migrate to the next advanced product and their investments in code development and certifications are protected and their platform “future-proofed”.
